EH214, Section House Kit, HO Scale

A section house like this was used to house a section gang. A section gang was a crew of workmen assigned to maintain a specific section of track. Some of the space in the building might also be used as a bunk room for laborers working on construction projects. A 1st class section house was used along long sections of mainline track. Each section house could house as many as eight to ten men by providing double bunks in one of the three second floor rooms and by using two small rooms on the first floor as bedrooms instead of as store rooms or pantries. The standard design Northern Pacific section house came into use starting in 1889. Some remained in service until after the second World War when employees would use their own cars to commute from their own homes. Smaller versions of this design and other variations also were built. This craftsman wood kit is made from Kappler scribed and strip wood, plus our own Genuine Cedar Shingles and pewter detail parts. The doors and windows are from Grandt Line. This kit was made directly from Northern Pacific blueprints, although a section house like this would work well on almost any line.
